Sam Again

29 April 2007

I’m not an Internet genius or anything, but it’s been brought to my attention that some people do not know how to navigate the web or even single websites in the most basic manner. This would not be only cousin Sam although Sam is over at her house still doing the strangest things with her poor old computer. On a good day she can extract a photo from an email in under an hour. WVR Update

27 April 2007

World Vital Records is now making its Best Offer Ever: a 2 year subscription for $48. They have an extensive collection of databases, maps, newspapers and more. This offer also includes the electronic version of Everton’s Handybook for Genealogists (regular price $40) for free. If you’ve been sitting on the fence this would be a great time to climb on down.

World Vital Records has also launched a new website called FamilyLink.

“FamilyLink is a free social genealogy network where you can connect with other genealogists from around the world and connect with your family. FamilyLink users can view the profiles of other individuals, communicate with individuals who have researched or are currently researching in their area of interest through the City Link feature, meet new individuals who also participate in the service, share photos, genealogical information, and post comments.”

Here are 5 things you can do for free on FamilyLink right now.

- Send messages to genealogists in more than 20 countries
- Upload photos of your favorite ancestors
- Visit our city pages where your ancestors lived
- Find genealogists who read and speak other languages
- Ask a genealogist in over 1600 cities to do a local record lookup for you

Mozy

4 April 2007

MozyIf you have your files on another computer, or up-to-date external drive or discs, in a different location, you’re in much better shape than a lot of us. If you don’t, you might think about online backup at Mozy.

I resisted this for a long time because I thought it was too expensive, too complicated and would expose my private files to prying eyes. None of those things are true.
