EverNote 3.0

EverNote 3

I’ve been dragging my feet about upgrading to EverNote 3. EverNote 2 is still available for download but they’ve dropped it on its head and someday it will be gone. Life without EverNote of some kind is unfathomable.

Legacy Tips

20 September 2008

Legacy Family TreeSeveral of you have asked for Legacy tips.

Well, it’s your lucky day. Mine, too. I don’t even have to come up with something on my own. There’s a section in the Help System actually called Tips and Tricks. If you click on Help/Contents and look under ‘Using Legacy’ it says ‘Tips and Tricks’. It’s divided into about 20 sections. Most of it’s a wall of text without pictures, so it takes a fair bit of concentration.

But the first category called ‘General Tips and Tricks’ is different. It goes through the various screens with numbered items showing you different things you can do.

Family Tree Maker 2009

16 September 2008

It seems like just yesterday when FTM 2008 was the laughing stock of the genealogy world. As of today, Family Tree Maker 2009 is now released with a ream of improvements and new tools. Have they redeemed themselves? My guess would be Yes because anything less would be dumb. Many people bailed from FTM 2008 in favor of Legacy and Legacy has its own problems.

New Home

6 September 2008

Greetings from the new location! Did you arrive without incident?

All old pages should now be redirecting through http://www.jgen.ws/

Please take note as I see in my browser it is taking forever and ever and ever to open the old website pages. That wasn’t happening while I was making the changes and testing. It only started after I finished.

Besides the URL’s, the only difference between the old and the new is that I added redirect code to all 290 of the old pages … one at a time for six hours straight. The joys of living in an ISP basement. I didn’t have access to an htaccess file that would have expedited the process with three lines of code in 10 seconds.

The new pages will be indexed by Google in due time, and gradually replace the old ones. The old website will stay where it is for 6 months, but the sooner you make the change the sooner you can be up to speed, so to speak. If you’re not arriving through Google searches, it doesn’t matter. Just change your bookmarks if you have any. If you are coming through Google you probably won’t be reading this.

If you use an rss reader, please resubscribe so you have the feed coming from the new address. I’m adding this page to both feeds so hopefully you can read it, but after this once the old one is toast.

My new email address is jl@jgen.ws. There may be errors and omissions in translation so if you see something, please drop me a line.

This would be as good a time as any for the second installment of What I Learned (about computers) This Week.

I managed to screw up my website name change so badly that I was propelled into buying a domain name and web hosting. Just as well. I’ve been dancing around it for a month refusing to make a decision, so why not just straight off the cliff without a parachute. I come to you as a complete novice so, all you would-be webmasters, learn from my mistakes.
